Rubin/Chile Fund

The Rubin/Chile Fund is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) and the University of Chile, related to the use of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), located at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory on Cerro Pachón.

This agreement provides annual resources as part of U.S. federal support to promote LSST-related objectives and the Rubin science.

The Rubin/Chile Fund contest will have its first version this year and will finance projects to be executed between the periods 2024-2025, for a total amount to be distributed of 812,000 USD.

Who is Vera Rubin?

Dr. Vera C. Rubin was an American astronomer who began her career in the 1960’s, with her work she was able to provide compelling evidence for the existence of invisible “dark” matter.

Previously, dark matter was only a concept that had been introduced but not taken seriously. Vera Rubin, together with her colleague Kent Ford, studied more than 60 galaxies and found that the stars at the outer edge were moving as fast as those in the center, which did not obey the laws of physics: there must be some invisible mass holding the galaxies together and making them rotate at high speeds. The work of these observations gradually convinced the scientific community that dark matter was real. Since then, scientists have worked out that dark matter makes up more than 80% of all matter in the universe.
