Areas of Interest

Observational cosmology. Quasars. Large Scale Structure of the universe. Clusters of galaxies. Galaxy evolution. Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB). Sun´s magnetic field. In recent research found that as many as a third of all clusters of galaxies may have been previously unnoticed (2018).

Biography

A native of Antofagasta, started his research at the European Southern Observatory(ESO) on magnetic and supergiant stars. Since 1976 faculty members at DAS. In the 1980´s he taught astronomy at undergraduate and graduate levels, initiated teaching of astrobiology at the university and general level in Chile, and also led the creation of a “Centro de Procesamiento Digital de Imágenes (CPDI)” at DAS. Co-discovered one of the largest structures of the Universe (1991). Since 1992 Full Professor, Universidad de Chile. Co-advised the first PhD graduate at DAS working on the CMB. In 2010, visiting professor at the U. of Yale Astronomy Department. Served (1999-2007) at the Chilean Commission of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) where he organized the Astronomy Program and first Director. Co-Chair of the LOC of the IAU Symposium No. 354 on Solar and Stellar Magnetic Fields (2019) held in Copiapó. Member of the IAU and SOCHIAS.
