From Galaxies to Compact Objects: Astrophysics with Hydrodynamical

Over the past decades, hydrodynamical cosmological simulations have proven to be a powerful tool for understanding the physical processes that shape the Universe and for making predictions that can be directly compared with observations. In this talk, I will highlight results from two research directions my team is pursuing. First, we use these simulations to investigate the properties and environments of the host galaxies of binary compact object mergers, the sources of gravitational-wave events detected by the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA collaboration. Second, we employ them to study galaxy formation in dense environments and along the large-scale structure, tracing systems from protoclusters at high redshift to the massive galaxy clusters observed in the local Universe. Finally, I will discuss key open questions in these areas and possible directions for future work.
