High-Energy Emission from Blazars and the Future of Gamma-Ray Astronomy in Chile with the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory

Active galaxies allow us to study extreme phenomena in the universe, such as the accretion of material onto black holes and the formation of jets of relativistic material in some of them. Blazars are a special type of these objects where the jet points very close to the line of sight, producing variable emission from radio to gamma rays, making them candidates for cosmic ray and neutrino sources. In this talk, we will review the basics of these objects, what we have learned from them in the gamma-ray band with the Fermi Space Telescope, and complementary observations in the radio band, where I have contributed since the beginning of the largest monitoring program so far. I will also take a look at the near future of these studies where Chile could play a central role with the installation of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory.
